Taft Laying Cornerstone at Y.M.C.A. Click here to return to THE STORY In the photo below the President speaks to the thousands of people in attendance, for the laying of the cornerstone of the new Y.M.C.A building.
Below is a close-up of the previous picture, showing the President at the podium.
The photo below shows the the President laying mortar to the base before the cornerstone is lowered into place.
In the photo below you can see the size of the crowd, as viewed from the stage. People gathered on the tops of buildings across the street to get a better view of the President. The building on the right is St. Mary's Church, built a few years earlier. The building in the center of the photo [across the street] with the "three spires" is the G.A.R. Hall. It would be many years before the G.A.R. Hall was moved to it's current location on Dane Street.
